Victor Tello / Nice N Easy

Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions Victor –

Please introduce yourself to our readers by telling us about how you got into riding.

My name is Victor Tello, I started riding in 2003. While saving up for my first car, I took the bus and then trolley to school and work which wasn’t my favorite, I couldn’t wait to save up money for a car. Every morning while waiting on the bus, I noticed a cyclist ride by, they then caught the same trolley I did.

I decided to dust off my 90’s Specialized Rock Hopper and ride to the trolley station instead, it was a sweaty mess at first, but pros outweighed the cons. I felt an overwhelming improvement on my mental health, so I wanted more. Doing this regularly, I observed road bikes commuted much faster. Several months later, I visited a bike shop in downtown SD called Penny Farthings, the owner Felipe was kind and super helpful on getting me on my first ever road bike, a 1977 Univega Supra Sport.

I rode off into the streets with the confidence of a Lamborghini owner, the speed, the smoothness and low drop bars made me feel unstoppable and free. Almost 20 years later and several years of competitive endurance sports, I still commute almost daily via bicycle.

Regarding how you contribute to the San Diego Bicycle Community, what are you working on / involved with?

I’m currently working on creative new ways to collaborate with bike friendly businesses, local bike groups and even local running clubs. I find joy in building a stronger bike friendly community where I live.

What are you currently focused on with all that?

I’m focused on building a fun environment for all cycling tribes while improving my community and supporting bike friendly businesses. The positive support and feedback I find very rewarding, it warms my soul when I see friendships being made around cycling.

What do you want our readers to know?

Bicycles are toys, instruments and artistic expressions. One can exercise, commute, race, meditate or even kill depression and stress while riding. Cycling improve communities, businesses and the environment. Bikes bring people together while creating healthy friendships. I want readers to know cycling is powerful and together we are unstoppable.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?

On my free time when I’m not riding, I create bicycle themed illustrations that inspire me while riding. You can visit my IG page @velotheory if you’d like to check them out.

Lastly, what is your favorite area to ride in San Diego and why?

I gravitate towards water. Lakes, rivers and especially the ocean. Running or cycling near water has peaceful and powerful healing energy. Communities surrounding Balboa Park are also my favorite, the beers, food, history and modern architecture of SD is beautiful to observe while biking. Thank you for taking your time to read, stay true and stay pumped.
